Getting listed on Page 1 of the major search engines takes some deliberation and know-how as well. Does being listed anywhere on Page 1 payoff? Here are two graphs that tell the whole story: The first is a pie chart representing which search engine gets the most traffic. (NetRatings provided to Search Engine Watch):

A technology degree is not necessary to see that Google gets the lion’s share of searchers. Twice what Yahoo! garners; almost 5 times that of Microsoft’s Live search engine receives.

The second bar chart shows us that business may still elude us even if our website is listed on Page 1 of any major search engine. The top three spots get a 62.66% share of visitor click-throughs while those “above the fold”, positions 1-5, earn 73.55% of the clicks by searchers.
